The World Almanac and Book of Facts (page 346 in the
2007 edition) also has emerald as the "Ancient"
birthstone for June (the "Modern" being pearl,
moonstone, or alexandrite). They list the Jewelry
Industry Council as their source. I can't find
"Jewelry Industry Council" but Google searching that
term with "birthstones" keeps bringing up the
Gemological Institute of America.

The GIA's current page on birthstones seems to be this
one:
http://www.gia.edu/microsite/7676/gemstones_magical_and_magnificent.cfm
Oddly, it's in alphabetical order by the name of the
gem (Amethyst to Zircon) rather than by month or
Zodiac sign.

Under "Emerald" it says:
Emerald’s lush green has soothed souls and excited
imaginations since antiquity. Its name comes from the
ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.” Emerald is
considered a symbol of immortality and faith, and an
aid to eyesight, insight, and intelligence.

Birthstone: May
Zodiac: Taurus
Anniversary: 20th, 45th
Where it's found: Afghanistan, Brazil, Columbia,
Pakistan, Russia, Zambia, Zimbabwe

(Taurus is the sign of the Zodiac for April 20 through
May 20 -- not June at all.)

-- Lois, whose lawn is getting more emerald color
every day. I need to see if my old gas-hog lawnmower
will start!
