Except for the geography, that's exactly my own experience.

I'm reminded of a technical meeting, a dozen years ago, where I
arrived late.  A speaker was alluding to one 'H. T. Emil', & a full
minute elapsed before I realized that he meant HyperText Markup
Language, or 'HTML' spoken fast.

I'd known the term only in print.
