Donna, you might try to get a copy of <Modern Psychologies and
Education> by M. V. O'Shea & Clarence E. Ragsdale (1932), available on
Questia. The book talks a lot about this concept, as for example:
<Early in this century there developed in America a feeling that this
type of psychology was rather barren of both theoretical and practical
value. There began to be an interest in mind as a factor in adaptation
to environment, leading to the view that mind consisted of certain
functions rather than of structures in a static sense. Among the
founders of this movement were Angell, Judd, Dewey, Ladd, and J. M.
Baldwin. The movement was given the name of Functionalism.>
I don't recognize any of those names as university presidents, but it
might give you some leads.
