No, as far as I know the containers originally called apothecary jars were
much smaller than what I'm thinking of, and were used primarily for dry
materials. They usually had ground-glass stoppers, in the old days, though
some of the jars were made of porcelain.

The ones I'm thinking of are called "show globes" and a beautiful selection
may be seen by scrolling about halfway down this page (go past the leech
