About the only word I didn't search on was 'sowle'. being wise after
the events of your and Sue's posts, I tried <sowle Bunyan> and got the
amended name in the second hit. It WAS de Guileville.

Many thanks, I will do the next leg for myself and report back -- but I
think I am just about there: Sci Am's Catherine Isabella Curt may in
fact be Katherine Isabella Cust, daughter and editor of Nathaniel Hill.

He is credited with "THE ANCIENT POEMS OF GUILLAUME DE GUILEVILLE
Entitled le Pelerinage de l’Homme Compared With the Pilgrim’s Progress
of John Bunyan. Edited from Notes Collected by the ... of the Royal
Society of Literature With Illustrations and an Appendix." This was
apparently published in 1858, says Worldcat.

I have identified a library copy in Sydney, and declare myself happy.
For the record, Worldcat showed nothing in Australia, but
http://librariesaustralia.nla.gov.au/apps/kss revealed three in Oz.

Good. A chance to waste sparklingly another day that could have been
spent on dull workaday shuffling -- thanks, all!

cheers
