Yes, this rings a bell.

There is a book from about 1880, "The ABC of Animals" by McLoughlin 
Bros, with similar rhymes.
"K is a Kangaroo hopping along
L stands for Lions, loud-roaring and strong."

I know I have read a book with similar rhymes, but I definitely don't 
remember those pictures, so there might be more than one.
