You could go through an art index like AskArt.com or artcyclopedia.com and see if any have those initials (I know, lots of work and luck involved). As an example, the only one I saw that was the right time period was maybe Holker Abbott (1858 - 1930), Known for: painter-religious art, museum director. Didn't have a middle initial that I could find. Good luck!

I Googled "artist initials" and came up with www.findartinfo.com, which has a monogram search. There were a few results for HMA: the best bet for date looked like Henry Meynell Rheam but unfortunately at the point my computer started refusing to load any page with a image on it so I couldn't check further.

  Anyone? [waves baton hopefully]

  Hi all,

I had this request from my patron:

"Would you happen to know of any artist (or school of art) who might have
painted in 1898 and used the initials HMA to sign his work? The painting is
of 2 angels flying. 3 crosses on a hill are barely visible in the
background.

I cannot seem to find anything on the Internet."

I poked around a little bit on the Internet myself, but I have no background
in art and really have no clue where to start. Any help would be
appreciated. TIA!
