~~~~~~~My English doesn't allow for "critical edition" in that sense, Edward. A critical edition for me would be an edition one could not do without or a cranky one. "Critico" in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese refers to an edited or annotated text and that's what I had hoped to convey. "Edito da" is customarily followed by the name of a publishing house. In Jeff's example it was not followed by anything, so I took it to be "published by," since "edito" is "published, put into print."

Me: But that's exactly what a critical edition means in the world of literary studies: an edition that contains not just the text but various kinds of commentary on that text in the way of introduction, footnotes, appendices, etc. In over 40 years in the feild I have never heard it used in the sense you have assigned it.
