My English doesn't allow for "critical edition" in that sense, Edward. 
A critical edition for me would be an edition one could not do without 
or a cranky one. "Critico" in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese refers to 
an edited or annotated text and that's what I had hoped to convey. 
"Edito da" is customarily followed by the name of a publishing house. 
In Jeff's example it was not followed by anything, so I took it to be 
"published by," since "edito" is "published, put into print."
