To follow up:
I found the quote in both "The Matchmaker" and in "The Merchant of
Yonkers." Interestingly, the quote appears in Act 1 of the Merchant
of Yonkers, immediately following the earlier quote I sent about
"money should flow like rainwater...", but appears in Act 4 of "The
Matchmaker", during a monologue by Dolly Levi.
I also checked "A Day Well Spent" and did not the quote there. A
little off-topic bit here: since I know you have an obvious affection
for quotations, I did find a commonly quoted phrase in this play,
which is dated 1835: "..this is jumping from the frying pan into the fire."
