Sounds like one of the "Adventure" series by Willard Price. Brothers
(13 & 17 yrs old approx) travel the world collecting animals for
their father's zoo. Hal Hunt is older and the "responsible one",
Roger Hunt is younger and tends to get into more trouble. Three
possibilities for the specific book are: Underwater Adventure, South
Sea Adventure, Diving Adventure ...
Anne Vespry (who also got turned onto this series by a 4th grade
teacher, though several years after 1953)
