One of my favorites may not quite fit the bill

In the article "The Ali Mystique" written in Newsweek, September 29,
1975, Muhammad Ali is quoted as saying "Listen to me. The man who has no
imagination stands on the earth. He has no wings, he cannot fly." A
picture caption in the article changed the quote to "The man who has no
imagination has no wings." It is this second quotation that is almost
always referred to, not what Ali actually said.
