This reminds me of a story I heard years ago. A colleague of mine told
me her husband, who was a stage hand at the Jacksonville (FL) coliseum
where many wrestling matches were held, said that he overheard one
wrestler saying to another during a match "it's your turn now".

If you count professional wrestling as a sporting event (which I don't,
though I'm a fan of it) and if you accept that it involves
athleticism (which in the large majority of cases it most
certainly does), there are occasional male vs. female matches,
though the only female wrestlers of recent years to participate
in them who look to me as though they'd have a chance in a real
battle were Chyna and possibly Luna Vachon. Chyna did in fact
hold the WWE Intercontinental Title (their second belt) for a time
after defeating (if I recall correctly) Chris Jericho.
Since the outcomes are predetermined, one could argue that in
such instances both combattants *are* competing on an "equal footing..."
