This might be what you remember -
Subject: no library at universities
In the January 30, 1995 issue of Newsweek in an article titled "Wiring
the Ivory Tower" (p. 62), this statement by the chancellor of the
California State University:
"You simply don't have to build a traditional library these days."
The article goes onto state his feeling that it is a waste of "money on
bricks and mortar and expensive tomes [which] could be better spent on
technology for getting information via computer[s]."
No library is planned for their new campus.
Well, that is one vision of the future of libraries. My vision is
that in five years or so California State will discover they need
libraries and more importantly librarians--people trained to organize
and locate information and trained to help other people learn how to
find information.
Problem: what can each of us do to prevent our chancellors and
other administrators from thinking one good way to help balance the
budget is to get rid of the traditional library or to let us die a slw
death by reducing support for libraries?
