Wow! My first query got a super-fast response. Here's another:

 

This novel, which my wife and I both read and liked, and which we now want
to pass along to my wife's little sister (as in Big Brothers/Big Sisters) is
probably a YA. Its heroine is a teenaged girl whose family has fallen on
hard times and moved from a prestigious Manhattan address, where our heroine
attended a preppy private school, uptown, near or in Harlem. There may be
another, younger, daughter. It's a white family. The girl, who is quite
mature and intellectually astute, meets a gang of black girls and begins
hanging with them and having adventures with them. That's about all we can
recall-but I'll bet it's enough.
