[PW] Groundhog Day?

Many years ago, I plucked a book off the library shelves at random, read it,
loved it, and promptly forgot it (the author was not a household name). It
was a novel about a guy who keeps living his life over, I guess until he
gets it right, ala Groundhog Day, but in this case it wasn't a day he
relived, but his whole life. I believe the interval kept getting shorter
(longer?) each time he came back. So what was it, omniscient ones? Thanks.
