The book sounds somewhat like "The Sunbird" by Wilbur Smith. The
novel has two tracks, one of a modern archaeologist finding the hidden ruins,
while another track shows the Phoenician community that lived there before
their destruction. The ruins, hidden underground, are discovered by standing
on a cliff, and looking out over the plain during moonlight. The change in
light showed walls, roads and geographic subsidence footprints.
At the end, the archaeologist runs into a crypt fungus among the
mummies, and during the hallucinations produced by the spores, the two story
tracks are finally intertwined.
If this isn't the book he's looking for, he will probably enjoy it
anyway. Wilbur Smith always writes ripping yarns.

I have a patron who wants to re-read a book from years gone by.... Story
involves shadows in a satellite image revealing ancient ruins somewhere in
Africa. A team of archaeologists go to investigate and find the ruins
contain a bacteria that causes hallucinations. Patron thinks the author was
Koontz or Coonts, but can't remember for sure.

I've looked at lists for authors Dean Koontz and Stephen Coonts but have
found nothing that looks like it would be this title. Have also Googled
obvious (and not so obvious) keywords.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks,
