Try "shadow box(es)" or "display box(es)". The two terms seem to be largely
interchangeable except shadow boxes are a bit deeper, thus more shadow.
See http://www.maxisminis.com/sitemapshadowboxes.html for examples (a site I
found at random by Googling "shadow boxes").

I've seeking a word or phrase, describing a box with many small
compartments (not the same size) that can hang on a wall or stand on a
table, in
which one displays little ornaments and such . . . they're used by people
who
make them to order with ornaments and such that detail someone's life . . .
they
look sort of like type cases (in which you keep movable printing type, but
those
have almost all the compartments the same size, and what
I'm thinking of doesn't . . . what are these display cases called?
Many thanks,
