Perhaps Noah Webster, and the fact that his dictionary was published in the
US and not in the UK, had something to do with the divergence of American
spelling. Webster simplified a lot of spellings and was really responsible
for the standardization of spelling in the US. His first dictionary was
published in the early 1800s. I'm sure the actual date is available through
Google.
