The new server is now working. A certain number of you may still have
trouble with the web interface to the list for a few days, but mail
should now work properly. (I had forgotten that mail sent to the list
initially goes through a server at a completely different hosting
company, so as far as mail is concerned, the only DNS delay to worry
about is the one at that hosting company. And since they also host
the DNS record for the domain, they got the right version very quickly.)
All subscriptions which had been disabled due to excessive bounced
mail have been re-enabled. (Since that includes a certain number of
subscriptions which were legitimately disabled, I will probably start
seeing notices again in a few weeks.)
For those of you who missed all the excitement, a (brief) explanation:
Some third party was caught sending spam. The server from which they
sent spam was hosted by the same hosting company as the server from
which Project Wombat mail was previously sent. Please note that the
spam had nothing to do with us, with you, or with your mail server.
This was a completely distinct machine. (Some people appear to be
under the mistaken impression that the problems sprang from their
personal mail servers, so I thought it would be best to clear that up.)
An anti-spam blacklisting company named Spamhaus decided to blacklist
every since address hosted by the hosting company, despite the fact
that this includes several hundred innocent machines. If you received
no mail from Project Wombat beginning on roughly December 26 and
ending now, then your mail server has the Spamhaus blacklist
installed, and had rejected all messages from the list, probably to
the point where your subscription was disabled.
We are now on a new server. The new server has not been blacklisted,
and is unlikely to ever be so.
Anyone having problems beyond this point should contact me directly.
