Don't have an official resource to help you, but I do live with an 
expert, who claims (1) that in 1978 the Ford F100 was a straight 6, 
not a V6; and (2) mpg would probably have been in the 12-15 range for 
the 2WD version.

Your patron could always check a few copies of Hemmings Motor News, 
where something like this vehicle could very likely turn up listed, 
then contact the owner and get actual figures. Ditto with many online listings.
