Susan:

As you have probably discovered, the NCAA site is very difficult to maneuver. There must be statistics on enrollment there somewhere, but I couldn't find them.

"The Chronicle of Higher Education" does a "gender equity report" and it has total enrollment figures for men and women, along with the percentage of participation in sports. There are 327 institutions in Division I, so it's going to be a lot of digging. Wake Forest, for instance, had a male enrollment of 2,033 and a female enrollment of 2,095 [2004-2005 academic year].

Here are the URLs for the report and for the specific data on Divison I:

<http://chronicle.com/stats/genderequity/>

<http://chronicle.com/premium/stats/genderequity/2006/selectresults.php?Division=NCAA+Division+I+%28all%29&Conference=&State=>

I have a membership to read this information. I'm not sure if you must be a Chronicle subscriber to read it.

Subject: [PW] football-playing Division 1-A schools with small enrollments

Hello from rainy Kentucky,

During one of the recent bowl games (who can keep them straight?) an
announcer said that Wake Forest has the third-smallest enrollment of any
Division 1-A school with a football program. Does anyone know of a site that
gives information about what other schools might make up, say, the top ten
in small schools with Division 1-A status and football programs?

This seems to be driving my husband and his friends crazy, and I'd like to
seem like the expert on such things (they'll of course know otherwise).

Thanks.

Susie
