[PW] Movie about 30's character in modern times

I'm filling up my Netflix Queue and I am trying to recall the name of a
movie that came out, perhaps 5-10 years ago, about a 30's movie character
transposed into a modern setting. I don't recall much about it because I
never actually saw it, but I know it was reviewed on television by Roger
Ebert and whichever co-host he had at the time, and that the movie made its
rounds in the art theaters. I'm not sure but it may be that he was a
musical comedy character, and it may even be that he remained
Black-and-White in a color world. I don't recall the names of any of the
actors in it. It wasn't PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, nor was it PLEASANTVILLE.

I sure someone on the list knows it well. I just can't recall the title
and can't figure out how to search for it.

Thanks,

Bill Davis
