The Library of Congress has a series called "Country Studies," which is available online.   However, Italy is not covered!  (:

You don't mention what city you're in, but if you have access to a public library which subscribes to a service called Culturegrams, they should have information on Italy.  I've found the service useful for students doing country reports.
