I've found the BBC News country profiles at 
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/country_profiles/default.stm
very useful and timely. Here's the site description: 
"Full profiles provide an instant guide to history, politics and 
economic background of countries and territories, and background 
on key institutions. They also include audio or video clips from 
BBC archives."

NationMaster.com (http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php)
is a good source for statistics, especially if you're doing country 
comparisons. It also has country profiles.

My thanks to John Franklin for setting me straight on the problem I had 
posting to the list - it was all completely my fault.
