For the record, and to defend the good name of a favorite author, it
wasn't Doyle who used it;  it was somebody who wrote an article about
the story (don't have his name -- the book's at home).  Since the story
was 1921, the article must have been even later;  if the word died down
earlly in the 1800's, I think it's safe to assume that the article's
author, who used it, must have been an old poop.

Like me, who also used it.
