Anyone interested in the history, culture, religous practices of
native Americans (particularly the Navajo) should read the many books by Tony
Hillerman. When he started wrting (he's in his eighties now, I think) he decided
that through his books, he would try to acquaint the world with Navajo life.
His books are mysteries, for the most part taking place on the huge Navajo
Reservation (NM, AZ, Utah) and the primary characters are officers of the Navajo
Reservation Police. And, BTW, years ago the government of the Navajo Nation
awarded him the title of "Friend of the Navajo Nation."

I live in Santa Fe and I have several Navajo friends (artists) who
continue to live on the Reservation and at least one who was raised in the
"white" world and, at middle-age, is trying to regain his Navajo heritage.
