The California Death Index 1940-1997 is accessible online through 
several genealogical websites. I found Leonide Keatinghe [spelling used 
in the CDI record] and there's a link for ordering a copy of the death 
certificate. Go to: http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi     I 
put in only the surname as "Keatinghe".

The death certificate is ordered from VitalChek so you can probably go 
directly to http://www.vitalchek.com without stopping at Rootsweb or 
Ancestry.com etc.   DOB for Keating is given as 17 Oct 1868; DOD is 11 
Sep 1945, Los Angeles. 

For others who may need California death dates prior to 1940, the 
California Death Index exists from 1905 forward but only 1940-1997 is 
online.  The California State Library has the print CDI from 1905-1939 
but will not do lookups - you would need to find someone local in 
Sacramento who could go to the State Library's California History Room 
and do the lookup.

The Sacramento Public Library Telephone Reference Service may be able to 
refer you to local researchers for hire:
1-800-209-4627. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do - probably 
much less but I expect there would be a minimum fee.

In the event that the 800 number only works within California, the local 
number is 916-264-2920.    I have been told that the LDS Family History 
Centers have microfilm [or fiche] for the 1905-1939 period but have not 
ever needed to find out since I used to have friends in the cooperative 
system based at Sacramento Public Library which system doesn't seem to 
be extant - lots of changes and mergers since I retired in 2001.
