Steve, your book sounds like _Dolphin Island_ by Clarke, which does include a
storm about to swamp the island as well as the remains of a long-dead Japanese
soldier who didn't know the war was over (it's set in the future, presumably
early 21st century, when transcontinental hovercraft is a primary mode of
transportation). Those are both small incidents--the plot focus is communication
with dolphins. No volcanoes or lava...
