Dear Karen Lofstrom:
You might check out my 2005 report on Afghanistan. "Adits, Caves,
Karizi-Qanats, and Tunnels in Afghanistan: An Annotated Bibliography".
Starting on page 66 of my bibliography on Afghanistan is a chapter on "Useful
Maps of Afghanistan". The maps and other reports usually have an OCLC or a
library location included with the annotated citation. See the free online
report from the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) at:

I'm looking for a map, preferably a topographical map with archaeological
sites identified, of the Lashkar Gah region of the Helmand Valley in
Afghanistan. I'd like to know just where the fortress of Qala Bist (formerly
the citadel of Bust) is located. I have an old picture of the citadel through
the famous archway and I know that it's somewhere in the triangle of land
where the Helmand and Argandab rivers merge, but I can't find any detailed
maps anywhere. I can get satellite pictures of the area, but I can't identify
the citadel from the those pictures.
Here are some possible sources:
D. Schlumberger et al., Lashkari Bazar. Une residence royale ghaznavide et
ghoride, Memoires de la Delegation Archeologique Francaise en Afghanistan
28 (Paris: Boccard, 1978)
Terry Allen, "Notes on Bust," Iran 26-28 (1988-90)
Ball, Warwick, Archaeological Gazetteer of Afghanistan
According to Worldcat, the Schlumberger is only available at a library in
Lyon, so that's out of the question. "Iran" is a periodical, behind paywalls.
The Ball gazetteer I could probably get through ILL, which I will do if no
one here can easily find a map of the citadel of Bust.
According to various travel books all the bluffs along the river are lined
with old fortresses, and I'd like to know where those are too.
If possible.
This is for my personal use, a novel that I'm researching, so there's no
hurry. No impatient patron.
