I've heard it said that in humid conditions the more poorly built your
bookcases are, the better for the books. It's desirable tht the shelves do
not meet the back of the bookcase (or the wall, if appropriate), so the air
is able to circulate around and behind the books, which helps to prevent
mildew and mold.
Considering the shape my bookcases are in, this sounds good to me.
Is Barbados weather really that much hotter and more humid than Washington,
DC? That's hard to imagine.
