There's a story from the BBC about the first ATM in the UK being installed in 1967 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6230194.stm).
An ATM timeline which looks reasonably reliable is at http://tinyurl.com/297tdq. That suggests that there would have been a few ATMs around in 1971, but that proliferation started a few years later.

Who can tell me about the state of ATMs in 1971? I know Visa started in
the 60s, and I'm _sure_ I remember ATMs in the early 70s.
