I'm wondering if the patron's memory of the book title is accurate.
Could it be the book below (information copied and pasted from LC online catalog).  John Bayley has written works of fiction, has edited literary anthologies and also has written works of literary criticism.

Strategy I used was to browse subject headings beginning with Alzheimer's Disease.  While scrolling through list, I noted Alzheimer's disease--Patients--Biography. In LC catalog, 31 items retrieved.  I looked for works with male authors and then when I opened up records, clicked on author names to see what other books they had written.  This is how above book was retrieved.

Subject: [PW] Book: Living with Alzheimer's

Does anyone recognize this? My patron is looking for a book called
Living with Alzheimer's. There are several books by this title, and she
doesn't remember the author's name. She knows it was a man who wrote
fiction before being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and writing this book.
Authors I've found so far who don't seem to have written fiction before:
Kenneth Doka, Tom Smith, Tom King, Gordon Wilcock, Art Danforth. Thanks
