And an early exemplar: The 1943 Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movie SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON, which featured a microfilmed document concealed in a matchbook that maddeningly changed hands from smoker to smoker until Holmes "smoked out" the solution.
