Book guys,
Some years ago I bought some reptile prints that had been ripped out of
some natural history book, probably early 19th century French. While I
despise the practice of destroying books, these prints were offered in a
small flea market in central France, and I have justified my purchase on
the basis that not buying them would hardly protect any other books that
came into this particular vendor's hands. Anyway, I would now like to try
to identify the work from which they came. Some of the plates (all 5.5 X
8.75 in.) have plate numbers that apparently start with number 1 for each
order. The order and plate number are at the top, and the French common
name of the taxon is at the bottom. I have asked a colleague and
herpetological book collector at Cornell, and he could not find the
plates in the works of Bory, Cloquet, Daudin, Sonnini & Latreille, or
Lacepede. I can send scans if that would help. The plates I have are as
follows (I can't do diacriticals, sorry):
Cheloniens ou Tortues
Pl. 1. 1. La Franche. 2. Le Caret. 3. Le Luth
Pl. 2. 1. La Bourbeuse. 2. La Ronde. 3. La Serpentine
Pl. 3. 1. La Rougeatre. 2. La Jaune. 3. La Grecque
Pl. 4. 1. La Molle. 2. La Geometrique
Pl. 5. 1. La Raboteuse. 2. La Chagrinee. 3. La Roussatre
Sauriens ou Lesards
1. La Tete Fourchue. 2. L' Iguane
1. Le Crocodile a Museau Effile. 2. Le Crocodile Caiman. 3. Son Oeuf
Ophidiens ou Serpents
Le Diven
1. Le Durissus. 2. Le Piscivore
Pl. 11 1. Le Chapelet. 2. Le Daboie
Thanks for any help you give me. Best, David
