Sydney,
Off the top of my head and based on a general interest in military matters
I'd say look into the Alaskan Scouts. I believe this is the unit your patron
is referring too.

Subject: [PW] Special Armed Forces Unit - Battle of Kiska and Attu
A patron has recently requested information on a Special Unit of the Army
that was employed during the Battle of the Aleutians during WWII. These men
were hunters/ trappers/ and local Aleuts familiar with the terrain and
environment, essential for battle in this region. I believe that they staked
out the area before the main operations to recapture Attu and Kiska.
I have found information on the 7th Infantry Division who carried out the
operation, but am unable to find the name of, or information about, this
special unit. The patron's interest was piqued after hearing about them on a
History Channel program. Now I'm interested too - this sounds fascinating.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Sydney Thompson
