I too thought of the ring cycle, but there was something else nagging at the 
back of my head as an alternative starter; now it has come to me:

The trilogy by E.R. Eddison, first published round the 1920s. I can't 
remember the short title of the trilogy, but one volume (?the last) was 
called "The worm Ouroboros". It was reissued in paperback in the 1960s, I 
recall, and may be worth a search on Amazon.
