Apparently many of the musical structures they used were quite sophisticated,
enough to have impressed Bernstein that he devoted a significant effort to a
study of their work.

As for the "many years". . .I think that Bernstein was impressed to the point
even where he was including being impressed from the perspective of HIS many 
years of training and experience.
