Wrong, wrong, wrong. He had been a state legislator, and a member of
the U.S. Congress who could have been re-elected, but stepped aside
for the next Whig in the rotation (as was local custom). He was an
experienced lawyer. He even held a patent. (There's a lot of mythology
about this so-called "raw backwoodsman," as our fellow womb at t Snopes
can testify.)
