Somaly Mam is a former child prostitute from Cambodia who now rescues
children who've been forced into prostitution. She's won awards and
been internationally recognized for her work in saving children.
I don't believe she had any experience as an activist prior to this. Her
only 'experience' is having been in the same situation herself.
You can find information on her through Google. I first heard of her on
CNN. Here's a link to an article:

A patron is looking for examples of people who, without experience for
a particular occupation, profession or job, then excels at the job. I've
done some searching on Google, Factiva and a few others but came up
pretty much empty. Thanks.
