I've always said that I think the most important attribute any
reference librarian can have is the ability to keep a straight face.
I've become so good at it that I can now b.s. practically anything with
a straight face and people believe it. We once had a member of the
public come in and berate me about why he had to leave at 6 when attys
and students could stay until 10. I told him that it was because the
local bar association brought in a group of chamber musicians at 6:30,
and we set up a buffet dinner on the 2d floor balcony. He bought it for
at least a minute, till I told him I was kidding.
