Have you checked with the National Recreation and Park Association? I think they'd be most likely to know if there's a directory. They're online at www.nrpa.org.
The problem I see is the definition of a "playground." Most schools have an area called a playground. Most parks have such an area, if not more than one. Day care centers have playgrounds. How do you define "playground"? What do you include/exclude?
Are you just interested in the United States? Or other countries? If you're truly going for "global," I believe you have an impossible question. Even just getting global figures on the *number* of playgrounds is probably impossible. (Do schools/parks in Kenya/Afghanistan/Cuba have playgounds?)
