James Holding published at least five mystery short stories about
"library cop Hal Johnson" in ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE in
the 1970s/1980s. This volume has at least one of those, maybe more.

A place to start....

I vaguely remembered reading a short story in Ellery Queen Magazine
a long time ago about someone who called himself a library cop. Went
looking and found this June 2000 posting on Fiction-L list from Dennis
Lien (who else?):
