[PW] Who invented the chain link fence and in what year?

Have Googled and Netscaped many different queries and not come up with a
definitive answer, yet lots of places to purchase.
Searched the Patent Office records and the earliest mention is a man by the
name of W. J. Davisson who has a patent for a machine that improves the
making of the metal fabric in 1883.
Help would be appreciated
