[PW] Children's book, featuring a bird family, encouraging development of individual talents

I'm trying to find a children's book from my childhood. The main outline of
the story is that upon the haching of their nest of eggs, the parent birds
encourage each of their children (along with their father's inventions) to
develop the individual abilities. In the end, they all become different
birds. One becomes a pelican who takes care of painting the Equator. I
believe another becomes a stork, and another becomes an ostrich.  I'm 39, so
this is going to be around that old, if not older. Thanks for any help you
can give.
