The long Matthews article has been digitized at Case Western Reserve

The Thornton reference (pp. 916-917) is a list of dated references
to "Uncle Sam"  printed between 1813 and 1864; many of them, including
all of the earliest ones, credited by Thornton to the Matthews article.
