Folks,
Many thanks to Allen, Adrienne and Harry. Like Allen, I'd assumed
'alpaca', too, but they're not native to Nicaragua. Adrienne's
suggestion was ingenious. I checked the reference you gave, but in that
document peca seems to be an abbreviation for petalostemon candidum, a
form of clover that is native to (I think) Missouri. Harry's suggestion
that Nicaragua might have been exporting sins to the US in 1934 was
wonderful.
About 30 seconds ago, using US Commerce Department statistics from the
1930s, I learned that in 1934, Nicaragua was the leading source of US
imports of something called ipecac. It's a root used to manufacture
emetics.
