You can try the international gazetteer (GEONet) at the National
Geospatial Intelligence Agency at: www.nga.mil. This used to be the set of
blue volumes put out on each country by the Board of Geographic Names (BGN)
and the Defense Mapping Agency (now NGA). They usually give the lat/long for
the feature name, and the name of the military map(s) where it is located,
although these maps may not be available to the public.
Go to Products and Services.
Look for GEONet, or go directly to the search mechanism at:
http://gnswww.nga.mil/geonames/GNS/index.jsp
Put in the feature name and country.
BGN Standard: Drinumor River; Short Form: Drinumor

Variant Driniumor River (UNI= -3028239)
Variant Driniumer (UNI= -3028238)
For domestic US place names, go to the US Geological Survey Library
at: www.usgs.gov/library
Click on "Geographic Names Info Systems" (GNIS) in the databases
section, or go directly to:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=135:1:530555831642701033
Also, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the USGS military Geology
Unit did a good job in an oversized publication and terrain reconnaissance of
the Island in 1943, with good maps and descriptions of the rivers from the
WWII period. You can borrow it from the US Geological Survey. Its
"Netherlands New Guinea. Terrain intelligence. Strategic Engineering Study
no. 93" Variation: Geological Survey (U.S.); Military Geology Branch;
Strategic engineering Study; no. 93. See OCLC entry: 15076902.
Good luck.

Folks,
There was a tough battle at the Driniumor River, at Aitape, Papua New
Guinea during WWII. The Allies captured the airport and many Japanese
soldiers, according to the _Merriam-Webster Geographical Dictionary_.
However, there is no Driniumor River any more. What happened to it? A
Google search brings up a *suggestion* that it was renamed "Aitape
River." M-W Geog. Dict. doesn't mention the river under either name.
An Australian friend of mine, with whom I once worked in Papua New
Guinea, doesn't know any more about it than I do (and he's on
vacation, anyway).
Does anyone know anything about the river? I don't need info about
the WWII battle. I just want to know what happened to the name of the river.
Thanks.
