Gilad Shalit was taken from an Israeli Defence Force border position near
the Gaza Strip but inside Israel. Hamas members dug a tunnel under the
border fence and attacked the Israelis, who were manning a tank, from
behind.

The other two soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, were part of an IDF
unit patrolling the border fence between Israel and Lebanon. A Hezbollah
team cut through the fence, infiltrated a short way into Israel and ambushed
the two vehicles on patrol, killing 8 soldiers and kidnapping 2.

Not to doubt the veracity of Forbes but every source I have seen, including
sources not known for their support of the Israelis, has referred to all
three as kidnapped and nowhere have I read anything about the Israelis being
in either Gaza or Lebanon at the time of their kidnapping. In addition,
during the July-Aug. fighting, the Israelis captured a Hezbollah fighter who
claimed he was part of the unit that carried out the cross-border raid into
Israel.

The confusion may stem from the fact that the Goldwasser-Regev attack
happened in an area known as Shebaa Farms, that some Lebanese claim to be
part of Lebanon but which is currently a part of Israel.

Personally I have no doubt that the term kidnapped is completely appropriate
for all three soldiers.

John, one was taken from his barracks before the war started, wasn't he?

If they were indeed taken prison while on the Lebanon side of the
border, which I have seen reported in more than one news outlet
(Forbes being one), then the word is "captured" and not "kidnapped".
