Michael--
The bicycle! Requires no fuel, uses no resources except human ones, speeds ordinary human travel by factors of 5 to 8, easily maintained, aids in human health, can be used to transport small or large loads, produces no pollution, usable by people from 5 to 105, produces joy, use is easily taught and once learned is remembered all your life.
Most widely used means of transportation on the planet.
Need more reasons? Silent. Elegant.
